First Vice President 

Deborah Fillman, MS, RD, LD, CDE

 

 


Deborah Fillman assumed the role of first vice president of the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) on January 1, 2008, for a one-year term. As first vice president, she serves on the Executive Committee, providing leadership to AADE, a multi-disciplinary organization of more than 11,000 health professionals dedicated to providing and advocating for quality diabetes self-management training.

Fillman is the director of community education for the Green River District Health Department in Owensboro, Kentucky. In this role, she is responsible for the Kentucky Diabetes Prevention and Control Program, as well as the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and the following community-based programs: tobacco prevention, physical activity promotion, abstinence promotion and breastfeeding promotion.

Prior to that, Fillman was the director of nutrition services for the Green River District Health Department, from 1998-2004.

Fillman has also been an active volunteer since 1989. She served as the association's treasurer from 2005-2007. Prior to that, she was a member of AADE's Board of Directors from 2001-2004, was the chair of the Bylaws/Policies and Procedures Committee and was a member of the Public Affairs Committee. On the local level, she was president of the Tri-State Association of Diabetes Educators from 1988-1989.

Her volunteer activities with the American Dietetic Association (ADA) are also numerous. She is currently a member of the Diabetes Care and Education Practice Group as well as Program Planning Committee. She has served as a theme editor for On the Cutting Edge, a publication of the ADA's Diabetes Care and Education Practice Group and was past chair for industry relations.

Since 1998, Fillman has been a member of the Board of Directors for Western Kentucky University - Owensboro Campus.

Fillman earned a Masters of Science degree in Foods and Nutrition, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics and Institutional Administration from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. Fillman is a registered and licensed dietitian and a certified diabetes educator.
