Treasurer
Donna Tomky, MSN, RN, C-ANP, CDE
Donna Tomky assumed the role of treasurer of the American Association of Diabetes Educators
(AADE) on January 1, 2008, for a two-year term. In her role, she provides financial guidance to the
association. She also serves on the Executive Committee, providing leadership to AADE, a
multi-disciplinary organization of nearly 11,000 health professionals dedicated to providing and
advocating for quality diabetes education.
Tomky works in the department of endocrinology and diabetes at the ABQ Health Partners in
Albuquerque, where she fills several roles: nurse practitioner, diabetes educator and information
specialist.
Prior to that, Tomky was a nurse practitioner, director of education, research coordinator
and an information specialist for the Diabetes Health Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, roles she
held between 1982 and 2000.
Also during this time, she served as a faculty member at the college-level and also for
various industry-sponsored initiatives. In addition, she served as a consultant for the New Mexico
Department of Health.
Tomky has been an AADE member since 1983. She served on AADE’s Board of Directors from
2004-2007, was a member of the Nominating Committee from 1998-1999, and was a faculty member for
AADE’s Choices and Changes program from 2003 to the present. In addition, Tomky was a founding
member of the National Diabetes Education Outcomes System project team, and along with the rest of
the Outcomes Task Force, has been instrumental in fostering its growth, as well as its expansion
into the AADE7™ Self-Care Behaviors
Tomky has also been active at the local level, serving as a member of the Board of Directors
of the American Diabetes Association’s Utah Affiliate, as well as being a member of the Zia
Association of Diabetes Educators, an AADE chapter.
She is an accomplished researcher, has been published in numerous healthcare journals and
magazines, and has been invited to deliver presentations at the local, regional and national
meetings.
Tomky earned her Masters of Science degree in Nursing and Health Informatics from the
University of Utah, Adult Nurse Practitioner Certificate from the University of Colorado Health
Science Center, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Northern
Colorado. Tomky is an adult nurse practitioner and a certified diabetes educator.
