Membership
Members
AADE's members are primarily diabetes educators and focus on helping people with diabetes achieve behavior change goals which, in turn, lead to better clinical outcomes and improved health status. Its a multi-disciplnary profession, as diabetes educators are already licensed in a related healthcare field. Most commonly, you will find that they are also nurses/nurse practitioners, dietitians or pharmacists.
AADE has several member categories:
Active Member
Healthcare professionals with an interest in the development, delivery or administration of diabetes patient or professional education or in diabetes research. An Active Member shall have the right to vote, to make nominations, and to chair, serve and vote on committees, and other privileges as determined by the Board of Directors. Active members who are employed by a company that is in the business of sales or marketing of diabetes pharmaceuticals, supplies or equipment shall not be eligible to stand for national elective office or a directorship position.
Associate Member
Person with an interest or involvement in diabetes education who does not qualify for other member categories.
Student Member
Any full time student or trainee in any health profession program. Student membership shall be granted when accompanied by evidence of enrollment in a health profession program.
Chapters
AADE currently has 100 chapters throughout the country. Most states have at least one chapter, larger states often have multiple chapters. A third model is one central chapter for the state, with multiple regions. All chapters must have designated geographic boundaries, chapter bylaws and chapter officers, among other things.Specialty Practice Groups
Specialty Practice Groups are designed to facilitate the professional development of and collaboration among AADE members with a common interest in specialized areas and functions of diabetes education. We currently have 20 groups.
Technical/Advisory Committees
AADE has many technical/advisory committees, workgroups and taskforces that assist with various association projects.
