Director of Diabetes Care, Fairview Health Services

Teresa Pearson is the Director of Diabetes Care at Fairview Health Services in Minneapolis, Minnesota. For over 20 years, she has been involved in direct patient care, guideline development, program administration, chronic care and population health, clinical quality improvement efforts, and the multidisciplinary team approach to chronic disease management and diabetes prevention. She has served on AADE’s Executive Committee and has published numerous articles on the above subjects.

 

Jim Fain, PHD, RN, BC-ADM, FAAN, FAADE 
Senior Editorial Advisor, AADE in Practice
Dean, College of Nursing, University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth

Jim Fain is the Dean and Professor of the College of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. Other leadership and educational experiences in nursing include positions at Yale University School of Nursing and the University of Rhode Island College of Nursing. He has been the Editor-in-Chief of The Diabetes Educator for over 20 years and is nationally recognized for his expertise, publications and research in diabetes management. His research has been funded by various sources, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

 

Diana Pihos, MA

Diana Pihos joined AADE in 2002, first serving as public affairs director and now as communications director. Prior to that, she managed communications initiatives for a risk management consulting firm and for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service.

 

Amber McCulloch, MA

Communications Manager, AADE

Amber McCulloch is currently the manager of communications for AADE. Before joining AADE in 2005, she taught literature and writing at the middle school, high school and college levels.

 

Marcia Carlson, RD, MPH, CDE
Metro-Area Diabetes Education Manager, Fairview Health Services

Marcia Carlson has worked as a dietitian and diabetes educator in the community health and family practice settings, as well as for the Indian Health Services. Previously, she served as a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa. Carlson's current position is manager for metro-area diabetes education at Fairview Health Services in Minneapolis, MN. She currently serves as secretary for the local AADE chapter, Minneapolis-St. Paul Diabetes Educators (MSDE)and is a member of AADE, American Diabetes Association and the American Dietetics Association. Her current interests include advancing the scope of practice for RD, CDEs and partnering with interdisciplinary teams to provide effective care.

 

Cindy Halstenson, RD, LD, CDE
Clinical Program Manager, Diabetes ActiveCare TM

Cindy Halstenson is the Diabetes Clinical Program Manager for the Diabetes ActiveCare TM program of Prescription Solutions, a UnitedHealth Group company in Minnetonka, Minnesota. Halstenson’s work in diabetes care and education includes clinical care, disease management, population health improvement, and program management. She has been involved in various diabetes organizations at the local, state and national level including the Minnesota area American Diabetes Association, the AADE chapter Minneapolis-St. Paul Diabetes Educators, NCBDE, and the Diabetes Care and Education (DCE) dietetic practice group of the American Dietetic Association. Halstenson has been an associate editor for the first and second editions of the AADE Desk Reference: The Art and Science of Diabetes Self-Management Education and served as the newsletter coordinator for DCE.

 

 

Gayle Lorenzi, RN, CDE
Community Health Project Manager, University of California San Diego

Gayle Lorenzi is an active member of the study group for the Diabetes Complications and Control (DCCT) study and the follow up Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) study. The EDIC study continues to provide valuable insight into the long-term picture of type 1 diabetes and factors that influence the development of complications. Her experiences include clinical care, clinical research, education and advocacy. She has worked within the pharmaceutical industry, and collaborated with various public health agencies and academic institutions to improve the understanding of diabetes by professionals and the public. She maintains active involvement with several professional organizations, has published in professional journals and presented at local, national and international scientific conferences.

 

Joseph Nelson, MA, LP, CST
Licensed Psychologist, Golden Valley Psychotherapy Associates

Joe Nelson is a licensed psychologist in private practice and specializes in the psychology of chronic disease, behavior change, sexual problems, and kids and teens.  He worked at the International Diabetes Center for 20 years, directing the psychological services for 12 years. Nelson was a member of the Professional Practice Committee of the AADE for four years, and has been on the Minnesota State Plan Steering Committee for 8 years. Nelson gives presentations nationwide to professionals and patients related to the emotional aspects of chronic disease, sexual health, and behavior change.

 

Hildegarde Payne, RN, MA, CDE 
Associate Director of Diabetes Center, Queens Hospital Center

Hildegarde Payne is the Associate Director of Diabetes Center at Queens Hospital Center in Jamaica, Queens. Payne has been the coordinator of an ADA accredited diabetes self-management education program since June 2004, and has developed a diabetes curriculum and conducted group education classes for patients who speak Spanish and Haitian Creole. Payne has over 34 years of experience, and currently serves as the President of the Metropolitan New York Association of Diabetes Educators. She is also active in the African-American Special Practice Group of AADE, as well as the American Diabetes Association.

 

Eva Vivian, PharmD, BCPS, BC-ADM, CDE 
Associate Professor, School of Pharmacy, University of Wisconsin

Dr. Eva Vivian is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy. She currently maintains a clinical practice at Access Community Health Centers in Madison, WI and oversees a community-based screening and intervention program for children at risk for type 2 diabetes. Dr. Vivian’s research interests focus on identifying disparities in the treatment of hypertension, diabetes and other chronic diseases among ethnic minorities, particularly African American and Latino patients and developing and implementing strategies to reduce and eliminate them. She has authored several articles, instructional materials, abstracts, and book chapters, and she serves as a peer reviewer for several medical publications. Dr. Vivian has lectured at medical meetings, conferences, and symposia across the U.S., and has held numerous leadership positions within professional pharmacy associations. She currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Merck Manuals and is past chair of the AADE Pharmacy Specialty Practice Group. She is also a member of the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists, American College of Clinical Pharmacy, and American Diabetes Association.
