Categories of Expertise (COE)
AADE has designated four categories of expertise to assist attendees in selecting educational activities to meet their needs. The definitions below are used to describe sessions and are based on the skill levels of the Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition. The model, used very successfully in business and healthcare professions, distinguishes varying levels of expertise; the model hypothesizes that learners pass through five levels of proficiency: novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert.
  • Advanced Beginner - for participants with working knowledge of key aspects of the covered topic
  • Competent – for participants with good working and background knowledge of the covered topic
  • Proficient – for participants with significant depth and understanding of the covered topic
  • Expert – for participants with authoritative knowledge and extensive understanding of the covered topic
