Mobile App Provides New Opportunities for People With Diabetes
To Improve Their Health
Tool for Apple and Droid devices is unveiled at the AADE Annual Meeting
For Release: August 7, 2013
The complex task of managing diabetes just got easier. Diabetes patients now have a free mobile app that allows them to set and track lifestyle and behavior change goals that are essential to managing their condition and improving their health.
AADE Diabetes Goal Tracker,” an app that is available for download from iTunes and the Google Play Store, is an interactive tool that incorporates the AADE7 Self-Care Behaviors™ -- the core tenets of diabetes education:
- Healthy eating
- Being active
- Taking medication
- Problem solving
- Healthy coping
- Reducing Risks
For each element of the AADE7, patients can set their goals, enter their progress and track
their successes. A unique feature of this app is the ability for users to share their completed
goals with one another; allowing them to learn from each other’s experiences.
Diabetes is one of the top public health threats in the U.S. today, impacting nearly 26 million individuals with the disease and 79 million who have pre-diabetes. A diagnosis can be daunting, as people with the condition are required to constantly monitor their diet and blood glucose levels.
Diabetes education teaches people how to self-manage their condition and is a proven way to lessen the complications that are often associated with diabetes, including circulation and vision problems, kidney failure, even heart disease and stroke.
The app was developed by the American Association of Diabetes Educators, with support from Boehringer Ingelheim, Lilly, Genentech, and Novo Nordisk.
