The American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) and mobile health company HealthSlate today announced the expansion of the AADE HealthSlate tablet program, which provides AADE members a tablet with a rich set of teaching aids, clinical resources, and patient management tools.

Launched on a limited basis in 2013, the HealthSlate tablet consists of an Android tablet and the AADE HealthSlate App, which includes videos, games and animations that educators use to teach diabetes self-management skills in 1:1 and group classes. The HealthSlate 2.0 app, available today, includes major new features requested by current tablet users, including:

• The ability to download apps from the Google Play store;
• Cloud storage that educators can use to upload their own teaching content, which can then be accessed via the PC or the tablet;
• Access to online glucose meter insurance and drug pricing information;
• Tablet-based forms for patient history and goals setting; and
• A new Carb Challenge for teaching carb counting skills.
• The ability to browse the web, send/receive emails and download apps.

AADE members who received a tablet in 2013 will receive an update notice on their tablets by September 1 for how to add the new features and convert their unit into a general purpose tablet.

Previously available only to AADE members who attended the AADE Annual Meeting, the HealthSlate app and tablet are now available to all AADE members. Those attending the 2014 annual meeting can obtain a HealthSlate tablet with the HealthSlate app at no cost. Starting September 1, members who did not attend the annual meeting can purchase HealthSlate tablets from healthslate.com for $99; the AADE HealthSlate App is provided as a no cost annual license (AADE member number required.) In addition, starting October 31, 2014, AADE members will also be able to download the AADE HealthSlate App onto their own iPads and Android tablets at no cost. Nonmembers will be able to license the app for $100 per year for use on their own tablets.

The AADE HealthSlate App

• The app includes a rich set of teaching tools in English and Spanish that are based on the AADE7 Selft-Care Behavior™ teaching framework, including:
• Videos, including more than 60 video clips organized by AADE7 topic
• Animations, including approximately 180 animations for teaching insulin injection schedules
• Games that can be used as fun group activities and patient knowledge assessment
• Medications Guide
• Diagrams of commonly taught concepts like Nutrition Labels, Plate Method, and Glucose Logs

The content can be emailed to patients and projected to a big screen TV or LCD projector.

The HealthSlate Tablet 
The HealthSlate tablet runs Android 4.2 and features 16 GB of storage, a 7” display with USB, and a micro SD port. HealthSlate requires periodic access to a WiFi network. More information about HealthSlate can be found at www.healthslate.com.
