Kentucky

Status: ENACTED

Kentucky was the first state to enact the diabetes educator licensure in 2013. There are two license credentials:

  • Licensed Diabetes Educator (LDE)
  • Master Licensed Diabetes Educator (MLDE)

In the state of Kentucky, the practice of licensed diabetes educators are regulated by the Kentucky Board of Licensed Diabetes Educators. This board ensures safe and competent diabetes education to all people in the state.

According to the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the Board:

  • Licenses all eligible candidates for entry into the profession of diabetes education
  • Recommends appropriate changes in the law to assure fairness and equality
  • Conducts formal hearing when necessary, and prosecutes any violators by due process
  • Is a self-supporting agency and receives no General Fund tax appropriation
  • Is entirely funded through fees assessed for licensing its professionals
