ADCES Receives Joint Accreditation to Implement Team-Based Approach to Continuing Education

Aug 07, 2020

The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists was recently awarded Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education, a designation that will allow the organization to build continuing education opportunities encompassing more of the diabetes care team.

“Through our new joint accreditation, ADCES is affirming our commitment to support and advance team-based care,” said Jodi Lavin-Tompkins MSN, RN, BC-ADM, CDCES, ADCES director of accreditation and content development. “We look forward to developing educational opportunities that are intentionally and collaboratively built with the needs and perspectives of all those impacting diabetes care.”

The accreditation aligns with the organization’s vision for the specialty, envisioning care delivery that is continuous across the health care team and puts the individual with diabetes at the center. A new focus on interprofessional continuing education will bring together various professions impacting diabetes care to create education that reinforces team-based planning and learning.

A full rollout of the framework and education planning process will take place in Jan. 2021. The new accreditation process will also be implemented at the state and local level through ADCES coordinating bodies and local networking groups, opening up new networking and partnership opportunities.

Joint accreditation is a unified accrediting body that allows organizations to provide credit to medical, nursing, pharmacy, dietitian, PA, and other professionals through a single, application process, fee structure and set of accreditation standards. Its unified framework is intended to promote education that is designed by the health care team, for the health care team. ADCES will explore adding additional professions in the future.

Please visit the joint accreditation website for additional information and this fact sheet for more information about interprofessional continuing education. If you have any questions, please contact the continuing education accreditation team at ceapplication@adces.org.
