However, if you’re like me, sometimes just getting started on a multi-step project can be the hardest part. Suddenly you’re a master of procrastination or easily distracted with other requests just to avoid that feeling of being overwhelmed. Well, you’re not alone. So take a deep breath, then take a moment to consider what resources are already available to get this project in motion.
Standard 1 focuses on gathering documentation associated with the basic foundation of your program. If you are affiliated with a larger business entity, existing materials may be accessible through administrative departments such as human resources. If that is not the case for your DSMES program, then creating these documents allows you an opportunity to strengthen your organizational structure. A mission statement briefly describes your program’s fundamental purpose. It conveys what you stand for and aligns staff members with that purpose. A best practice is to avoid lengthy mission statements that are hard to remember or with which to identify. Your program goals should tie back to your purpose or mission statement. Reflect on core values and intended outcomes to develop key goals that are attainable and relevant to the program.
Organizational Chart. Think of this as a staffing flow chart. Again, if you can obtain this from administration, it will be helpful if your program is part of a larger division. However, you will likely find yourself creating a document that details your specific organizational or program structure, including staff positions and reporting relationships. But don’t worry – you can create a simple organizational chart in PowerPoint. In addition to slides, PowerPoint provides access to various chart designs that can meet your needs. Now you’ll not only have fulfilled an accreditation step- you’ll be establishing documentation that will be helpful from an operational standpoint.
Policies and procedures are probably an area where documentation currently exists. Keeping these updated and current is not only a compliance matter in the healthcare space, but it is also a business necessity where policy and procedural legacy can assist with ensuring consistent practices in the workplace. Onboarding and training of new staff is also reinforced with well-written documentation.
Finally, job descriptions may also already be in place if your organization requires a position description as part of the staffing approval process.
