The wait is over! The 2017 National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (National Standards) have been revised and published online in The Diabetes Educator.
Updated every five years by AADE and the American Diabetes Association, the National Standards provide guidelines for operating a DSMES program. It is required that all accredited or recognized programs by AADE or ADA meet these guidelines in order to bill Medicare.
Major updates include changes in language, an increased focus on quality and recognition of new models of care (in particular, incorporation of technology-enabled self-management solutions).
For those attending AADE17 this week, be sure to attend an overview session on Friday, August 4 at 5:00 p.m. We will also be highlighting the changes to the National Standards during a 90-minute webinar on November 14 and in upcoming issues of AADE in Practice, starting in January.
