Highlights from the Virtual Meeting

Aug 10, 2013

I love the virtual meeting! AADE did a great job providing access to the general sessions and selected breakout sessions.  This morning, I spent some time listening to Friday’s general sessions and catching up on other session, while I was drinking my coffee.  I thoroughly enjoyed all the breakout sessions, but wanted to mention a few highlights for myself.

Controversies in Gestational Diabetes by Julia Daley
This presentation provided a nice review of maternal and fetal risks of gestational diabetes, which allowed me to think about the emotional, financial, etc. impact of the disease.  I also learned about the statistics of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome developing type 2 diabetes.  I will be able to share specific information with my providers, such as the screening in unusual cases – bariatric surgery and hyperemesis due to the inability to tolerate glucose load.

Monitoring Medication Safety by Laura Shane-McWhorter
Any health care professional involved in diabetes management should listen to this presentation.  This particular presentation was a great review of medication safety.  In addition, safety issues of specific agents were reviewed, such as the evidence for pioglitazone / bladder cancer and insulin glargine / cancer.  From this presentation, diabetes educators should understand their important role in medication safety and collaborate with clinicians along with patients to enhance safety.

Choosing the Right Medication at the Right Time by Julie Sease and Kayce Shealy
I have to give a SHOUT OUT to my colleagues from Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy.  In this presentation, real-world cases were reviewed, incorporating the 2012 Position Statement on the Management of Hyperglycemia from the American Diabetes Association and European Association for the Study of Diabetes.  Great job ladies!

Listening to the selected sessions reminded me about how exciting the AADE meeting can be and I look forwarding to attending the meeting next year in Orlando.
