ADCES Appoints New Board-Elected Director to Advance Strategic Initiatives

Mar 19, 2021

Dr. James R. Gavin III, M.D., Ph.D., joins the board of directors at the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists as a board-elected director, serving a two-year term to advance partnerships within the diabetes community and beyond. Dr. Gavin brings more than 50 years of experience in evaluating new therapies and treatment strategies to improve care and outcomes.

“I look forward to strengthening strategies and mechanisms that encourage access to and utilization of state-of-the art self-management information for people affected by diabetes, especially those at the highest risk and those who suffer the most disproportionate burdens of poor outcomes,” said Dr. Gavin, MD, Ph.D. “Effective self-care demands constant updates and refreshment, as well as an understanding of the latest technology. Diabetes care and education specialists are best suited to lead and coordinate such efforts across organizations and disciplines.”

Dr. Gavin was one of the founders and champions of the African American Diabetes Education Program and spent many years working to expand the reach of activities within the National Diabetes Education Program. He has held positions with the Minority Diabetes Prevention and Intervention Program at NIDDK and the National Diabetes Advisory Board, as well as serving as president of the American Diabetes Association. Most recently, he was a founding chairman and chairman emeritus of the Partnership for a Healthier America, as well as CEO and CMO of Healing Our Village.
