In this holiday season, it is so easy to get caught up in all the hustle bustle and tasks at hand, and miss the opportunity to say thank you. I did not want to miss that opportunity. It has been the highlight of my professional career to have the privilege to serve on the Board of Directors for AADE as the Member Affiliates Liaison (MAL) over the past two years.
Our members do so much for those with or affected by diabetes. You laugh and cry with people with diabetes and caregivers. You research and teach to help the next generation of educators. You cheer-lead, you take late night calls, you miss lunch, you manipulate schedules, and you care, all to help just one more person facing diabetes to be able to say, “I can do this.” You are AMAZING!
As a board member, you are the reason we volunteer to help lead the organization, working to make your life as an educator better. Over the past two years, we have had some massive undertakings and are pushing this organization to be the best. I am very proud of the work we have done as a board and the direction AADE is going. I know next year’s board has the enthusiasm, the knowledge, and the skills to get us to a place we can be proud of being members and have the resources to be the best diabetes educators (or whatever we will call ourselves) ever.
I have treasured my time on the board. It was a chance for me to grow as a leader and learn from some fabulous mentors. It fueled my desire to start graduate school, and to find my place in our volunteer world. And for me, being in the MAL position, I really took to heart being that connection between the board and the volunteer leaders. I have learned so much from all of you, and I hope I have done the job you all elected me to do a few years ago. I have loved meeting you all at our past Annual Conferences, Public Policy Forums, State CB Leadership Trainings, working with the MAC (Member Affiliate’s Council), and of course online on My AADE Network.
Thank you so much for volunteering and leading in AADE.
I’ll see you all in Baltimore!
