2018 State Coordinating Body Training Program Update

Mar 16, 2018

This important program is held over a day and a half every January in Chicago. It is a wonderful way for new CB and LNG leaders to network and learn about their roles and responsibilities. This year, 58 participants represented 37 out of 40 State CB’s. About two-thirds of the group were first-time attendees, which was nice to see. The program was engaging, informative and inspiring.

The meeting was packed with great learning opportunities. AADE President Donna Ryan and CEO Chuck Macfarlane started it off with a presentation about AADE's goals and priorities for the future. Population health, new models of healthcare delivery, leveraging peer support networks (formerly, diabetes online communities) and continuing to strengthen industry partnerships are all priority areas this year. Donna and Chuck reported that the 2018 content priorities for the organization are hypoglycemia, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, obesity, technology integration, pediatrics, diversity and the vision for the future of the profession.

Marcie Stern presented the keynote address, “The Art of Delegation and Inspiration”. Marcie shared her authenticity with the program attendees and talked about why it is critical to be authentic to motivate and inspire others. She encouraged the group to identify the qualities of great leaders who they admire and to emulate those qualities in the leadership roles they fill. She encouraged the leaders to follow the "Platinum Rule" by treating others as they wish to be treated. Marcie inspired meeting attendees with her powerful message.

Other presentations included such important topics as:

  • Project management tips
  • Getting member input
  • Managing CB finances
  • Strategic content and on-line strategy planning
  • The importance of local advocacy
  • Building volunteer teams

A highlight of the program was a sneak peek at the new AADE technology platform. Crystal Broj, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer, shared a preview of DANA, Diabetes Advanced Network Access. This invaluable resource is scheduled for release in the spring, following the unveiling of the app review feature at the end of January. DANA will include an extensive catalog of technology and resource information; access is an exclusive AADE member benefit.

A valuable part of this meeting is the face-to-face networking and sharing among state and national AADE leaders. This small group setting offers attendees the opportunity to meet each other and AADE staff and Board members. This is a rare learning opportunity and one that should not be missed by State CB leaders. When determining your budgets each year, please be sure to support the attendance of new leaders at the annual training meeting.
