Patient-centered motivational interviewing (MI) skills can help forge continuity in relationships with patients, foster loyalty to the education program, and help achieve the sustained self-management behaviors and improved outcomes that are so important in today’s healthcare environment.
AADE’s Research Committee identified gaps that aligned MI with our strategic initiatives. Driven by these findings, we developed initiatives to highlight our members’ unique contributions to people affected by diabetes. One of the outcomes of these initiatives is an MI course to teach interviewing techniques that foster behavior changes in patients. The pilot course, Motivational Interviewing: Patient-Centered Communication Skills Training is led by Jan Kavookjian, MBA, PhD; Associate Professor of Health Outcomes Research & Policy, Auburn University.
