2018 Physician Fee Schedule: CMS Releases Proposed Rules on Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program Services

Jul 28, 2017

On July 13, the Physician Fee Schedule was released, which contains the second proposed rule from CMS on the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program (MDPP) Expanded Model.

The MDPP portion begins on page 555 and includes policies needed for suppliers (DPRP recognized organizations implementing the National DPP) to begin providing MDPP services starting in 2018.
This ruling includes details on the proposed MDPP payment structure, supplier enrollment requirements and compliance standards and is now open for public comment until September 11, 2017.

AADE is in the process of reviewing the document and will be formalizing our response to best represent diabetes educators and the AADE DPP model. Once our comments are developed, we will send an email to all members, letting you know our views and encouraging you to provide your own public comment.

2018 Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program (DPRP) Standards
Released on the same day as the 2018 Physician Fee Schedule, the DPRP Standards are revised every three years to reflect current science and best practices. AADE is reviewing the proposed Standards, and we will share our comments via email with you soon. Of particular note is a new category of recognition called preliminary recognition which will allow organizations that have not yet achieved full recognition to begin billing Medicare in 2018. Read the announcement.

AADE Prevention Network

In 2017, we launched the AADE Prevention Network, which compiled tools being used by programs operating within AADE's grant-funded diabetes prevention delivery network and made them available to other DSMES programs, as well as any DPRP recognized program preparing for the MDPP benefit. Based on the 2018 Physician Fee Schedule and CMS's final ruling, we will continue to offer tools, resources, education and support to assist programs in the delivery of the National DPP.
