It’s no surprise that mobile phones have had an impact on diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) interventions and outcomes. A systematic review just published in the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology shows it can also improve A1C levels. The key is for the intervention to incorporate the components of a technology-enabled self-management feedback loop. This means that people with diabetes and their health care team interact with one another, the patient-centered health data is analyzed, the education is tailored, and the feedback individualized.
The authors suggest that organizations, diabetes educators, policy makers, and payers should consider a technology-enabled self-management feedback loop solution in the design of DSMES for population health and value-based care models.
