AADE Closes Out 2012-2017 CDC Funding Opportunity to Pilot National Diabetes Prevention Program

Oct 06, 2017

Over the past five years, AADE has helped more than 4,000 people at risk for type 2 diabetes to lose weight and be more physically active!

During this time, we have worked with 55 DSMES programs across 17 states to implement the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP), a CDC initiative aimed at preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes. This has, in part, paved the way for the upcoming Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program benefit.

To date, AADE DPP programs are delivering the National DPP lifestyle change program in over 60 locations including hospitals, employer worksites, medical centers, clinical and community centers. These programs have demonstrated a track record of providing quality programming, with 21 of the current programs having already achieved Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program (DPRP) full recognition from the CDC. AADE DPP sites make up 20 percent of all fully recognized CDC DPRP Programs.

In fact, AADE DPP sites have not only met but exceeded CDC's DPRP requirements in several areas including weight loss and attendance. The average percentage of weight loss in months 1-6 has shown to be 5.4 percent and 5.7 percent in months 7-12. Additionally, these programs have shown positive outcomes in regards to enrollment and retention with an average of 14.7 sessions attended in months 1-6 and four sessions in months 7-12.

As our current cooperative agreement (DPP1212) comes to a close, AADE would like to thank our grant-funded AADE DPP programs for their pioneering work in this space of prevention. We are honored to have worked with organizations who have been able to implement diabetes prevention programs and help increase their communities and the quality of lives of so many people.

AADE is excited for the potential opportunity to continue our efforts in the prevention space and address gaps where the National DPP can target certain populations and geographic areas where DPP needs a larger footprint (see accompanying article).

We will continue to support our current programs and other DPRP programs through our network of services. Learn more about the AADE Prevention Network.
