AADE recently released a new practice paper that describes how the diabetes educator plays a pivotal role in providing education to individuals with type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is unique in its ongoing and relentless requirements for assessment and minute-by-minute decision-making. As diabetes educators working with individuals and families with type 1 diabetes, the challenges are never-ending, and the need for education, understanding and support are never extinguished.

The biggest task for educators is to keep informed about all aspects of care for the person with type 1 diabetes, including medication options for treating diabetes, the action of all insulins that may be incorporated into their care, meters and lancet devices—as well as their appropriateness for the individual, and keeping up with new technology, pumps and sensors. Diabetes educators belong on the front lines of care for people with type 1 diabetes and their caregivers. They are well-versed in the uniqueness of this complex and tedious condition.
