This week, Abbott announced that the FDA has begun to allow the use of CGM in hospital settings during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Close Concerns, Abbott and Dexcom are already making CGM available in hospitals. Abbott has reportedly donated 25,000 FreeStyle Libre sensors to hospitals in certain COVID-19 hotspots, and Dexcom is set to donate 10,000 phones and readers to hospitals.

Last week, ADCES joined the Diabetes Disaster Response Coalition in a statement of support for inpatient use of CGM. Allowing inpatient use of CGM during the COVID-19 pandemic allows for continued blood glucose monitoring for people with diabetes while hospitalized. This is especially important given the fact that certain medications and other factors, such as stress, can cause hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia.
