American Association of Diabetes Educators Honors Excellence in Diabetes Education

Aug 04, 2017

Eight diabetes educators were honored for their achievements in the field of diabetes education and their dedication to the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) during its annual conference. Award winners are:

Diabetes Educator of the Year Award
Stephen Ponder, MD, FAAP, CDE

Pediatric Residency Program, Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Hospital

Ponder brings 28 years of passion to diabetes education as a board certified pediatric endocrinologist and 50 year Joslin Medalist. He created the “sugar surfing” method to empower individuals with diabetes to live fuller, more satisfying lives. Ponder continues his work helping people with diabetes, most recently creating a non-profit providing free workshops to empower individuals and families in methods of “in the moment” diabetes self-care. He currently serves as the Pediatric Residency Program Director at Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Hospital.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Margaret Powers, RD, PhD, CDE

International Diabetes Center

Powers represents almost 40 years of volunteerism with AADE, dedicating herself to further the work of diabetes educators and empower those affected by diabetes. Her vision for the profession has led to the widely recognized joint position statement on key times to see a diabetes educator, and many of her published guides have become industry standards for training. Through her high-impact leadership, Powers has cemented her place as a thought leader and active proponent for diabetes educators and those they serve.

Linda Siminerio, RN, PhD, CDE

University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute, School of Nursing, School of Medicine

Siminerio has been involved in diabetes care her entire life, growing up with a father who had type 1 diabetes, and later focusing her professional career on building the evidence base for diabetes education. Over the last 40+ years of work, Siminerio has been involved in nearly every professional diabetes organization, advocating for improved access to diabetes education, youth projects, safe school initiatives, and has been awarded numerous NIH grants to continue her work.

Allene Van Son Distinguished Service Award

Barbara Schreiner, PhD, APRN, CPLP, CDE, BC-ADM

Assessment Content & Research, Elsevier, Inc.

Throughout her career, Schreiner has been an enormous resource to the diabetes education profession, helping to author several major publications for AADE and the ADA including AADE’s well known Art & Science of Diabetes Self-Management Education Desk Reference. She is responsible for helping to create one of the first master’s level programs for diabetes specialization and continues to serve as both a mentor and a key player in shaping the future of diabetes education.

Innovative Use of Media and Technology Award

Monica Joyce, MS, RDN, LDN, CDE

The free tool allows programs with minimal resources like the YMCA and summer camps like Slamdunk basketball camps, that Joyce and Alesia both run, to access and work with more diverse populations of children. The Slamdunk basketball camp has grown from a single inner-city camp to 6 locations, and many more clinics, nationwide.
