New Certificate Program Launched to Build Diabetes Care Team Knowledge, Application of Continuous Glucose Monitoring in People With Diabetes

Dec 26, 2019

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is an increasingly recognized tool to improve outcomes for people with diabetes and provide more effective, individualized management. To ensure a solid base of knowledge and support by diabetes care and education specialists (formerly called diabetes educators) and the greater diabetes care team, the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) has rolled out the CGM Certificate Program on The program is part of a larger vision for the specialty of diabetes care by the Association which, in part, seeks to leverage technology to improve clinical outcomes.

“Diabetes care and education specialists are in an ideal position to support people with diabetes in their understanding of CGM, translate data into a tailored treatment plan, and provide insurance and reimbursement guidance,” said AADE Director of Learning Ken Zielske, CAE. “AADE has continued to build new tools to upskill members on the use of CGM and other technology through our technology-focused website, We look forward to seeing this train-the-trainer approach impact care and provide ongoing benefits for people with diabetes.”

The CGM certificate program is free to AADE members and worth 14.5 continuing education credits upon completion. Key learnings addressed:

  • Analyze CGM reports and interpret results to help the person with diabetes achieve their goals
  • Recognize the benefits and barriers of CGM
  • Utilize case studies and strategies to overcome challenges
  • Discuss billing codes, insurance verification and reimbursement
  • Understand the logistics of setting up a CGM program in a rural setting and large health system

AADE has continued to build on existing CGM resources released in Danatech, including a professional CGM implementation playbook developed by AADE and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. AADE members can access the course here or visit for additional CGM resources.

The CGM Certificate Program is supported by an educational grant from Abbott Diabetes Care and The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.
