Why I Love MY Job Contest...Inspires All of Us

By: Nadine Merker, Director of Member and Volunteer Engagement

Several months ago, I asked to hear from you as to why you loved your job as a diabetes educator.  The entries we received all shared the inspiration diabetes educators receive from working with their patients and the fulfilment and satisfaction from knowing that you are making a difference in the lives of your patients and their families.

It was very difficult to select the three winners who will each receive a free year’s AADE membership. However, we did select the following three members’ entries listed below. Congratulations!

Annie McCoy RD, CDE. LDN

Ann Heard- Nesbitt RDLN, CDE

Maggie Beville RN, BSN, CDE, MLDE

Starting with this issue, we will be sharing one of the winning entries beginning with Annie’s.

Thank you again to everyone who submitted an entry.  Your passion and dedication as diabetes educators inspire us all!

Why I love my Job as a Certified Diabetes Educator Every day:

Every day I learn something new from the fine people who surround me –EVERYONE on staff , professional  and community organizations enhance my knowledge - especially the patients!

Every day I hear “Thank you – this was very helpful” after an individual or class session or phone call.

Every day I see people improving  lifestyle choices; complications prevented; people learning, sharing motivating each other !

Every day there is opportunity to give back to the people and community.

Every day I pray that I can help the people I come in contact with who live with Diabetes EVERYDAY.

My mother had a picture of angels in her home with the saying:  “It is only in giving oneself to others that we truly live” - Ethel Purcy Andrus.  This Career gives us the opportunity to truly live EVERYDAY!

Reminder: New Forms for Continuing Education (CE) Hours

If you missed last month's article - AADE is excited to announce updates to the process for CBs and LNGs requesting continuing education hours (CE hours) for your programs! The new planning forms are streamlined from the previous “CE Application” process forms. These planning forms are exclusive to AADE CBs and LNGs and are accessible in the Volunteer Leader Resource Center under the Administration icon.

We encourage the CBs and LNGs to use these new CE forms. For groups who are already in the midst of planning we will accept the previous CE Application forms until July 31, 2016. The new CE planning forms will be required effective August 1, 2016. Some highlights for the new CE planning forms include:

  • New Activity Planning form – formerly the “CE Application” is now the CE activity planning form. This planning form allows the CBs and LNGs to proactively plan their programs rather than focusing on a CE Application approval process.
  • New Educational Activity Plan Table – This new table is for both live and enduring programs and lessened information to be completed by presenters.
  • Grow Registration numbers – the new promotional template allows CBs and LNGs to list the amount of CE’s for participants.
  • A streamlined process – new CE forms eliminate entering duplicate information and a simplified Educational Activity Plan table for presenters.
  • As before, CBs and LNGs will continue to submit CE forms for their programs electronically to the AADE CE Application inbox at ceapplication@aadenet.org.

What is MAC?

By: Melanie Teslik, RN, CDE, Member Affiliates Council

I was at my biannual state Coordinating Body meeting and a question was asked; “What is MAC?”

MAC stands for Member Affiliates Council. There are five members of MAC.  Representing the State Coordinating Bodies are Kathy Gold, Jeanna Rhoulhac, and myself.  Representing the Communities of Interest are Meghan Jardine and Molly McElwee-Malloy. The goal of our group is to start a conversation with AADE State and LNG Leaders through MY AADE NETWORK. The topics can range from sharing how your state completes an activity, how you handle a situation at a conference or local meeting, or something AADE is planning (such as the annual AADE Conference in San Diego).  MAC is a forum for leaders to share what they are doing or encourage discussion on a specific topic.

An example of a difficult situation came last year, when our state (New York) had a conference. With each issue that came up at the conference, we as a coordinating body had to brainstorm solutions together to find solutions.  All Coordinating Body teams do this, and put out small fires everyday.  MAC is there as an outside resource for leaders to call on when they would like a different perspective or guidance.  Since we all come from different backgrounds, it can be helpful to look to MAC for creative solutions to problems! We always felt that AADE was just a call away if we wanted some feedback / guidance on how to handle a situation. After the event, each chair wrote up and reported their process to be use in the future. Many of us have done conferences and this was an opportunity for us all to learn and share your expertise.

There are many diabetes legislatures in the pipeline. As a member of MAC, we ask ourselves: what can we do as a group and what worked in your State to move legislation forward? As leaders, we have so much expertise to share with other states and our LNGs.

The goal of MAC is to share. MAC emails only go to the identified leaders in each state (Coordinating Body teams). If you see an email from us, please respond. Let’s share your ideas and ours through our collective expertise from across the United States.

Save the Date: 2017 State CB Training

Here in Chicago – we are just getting a little taste of Summer, but we are looking forward to the AADE State CB Training event January 13 & 14, 2017.

For those of you who attended the event in 2016, I am sure you will agree that the programs that were offered became more important as you made your leadership transition.

We are excited to be able to offer this program again in 2017 and we look forward to meeting with the incoming State CB Leaders.

As you plan your budget for 2017 be sure to include a line item for travel for your incoming CB Chair.

The 2017 event will be held at Fairmont Chicago at Millennium Park. This is the perfect location for those of you who have never been to Chicago or for those of you who can’t wait to come back to Chicago.

More information to come in the next few months.

MY AADE NETWORK Admin Tip: Ensure Your Event Information is Complete

Create an EventIt's exciting to see the number of CBs and LNGs using online event registration with MY AADE NETWORK grow each year, especially with the new look and feel recently launched! Transitioning to fully online registrations for your events can be both be rewarding for your CB or LNG, since it helps better serve attendees and event coordinators in a number of ways.

We have seen many groups utilize MY AADE NETWORK to set up events successfully and seamlessly.

With online event registration, you’re able to:

  • Easily track your attendees from year to year
  • Ask and maintain attendee special request lists for events—questions about dietary restrictions, physical accessibility questions, or special housing accommodations
  • Provide attendees with immediate online registration confirmations via email
  • Allow attendees and vendors to pay via a secure credit card transaction—no more writing down credit card information on pieces of paper that can get misplaced

Here a few tips we would like to share to ensure your event displays all of the information you have available to potential registrants:

  • If you haven’t had an opportunity to attend a training on setting up events, this is available as a recorded webinar that you can view at your convenience.
  • When setting up your online registration, pay special attention to your marketing page setup , as this is the first page attendees will see when they click on a calendar item and want to register for your event.
  • Make sure your online registration includes a cancellation policy, if you would like to set a deadline and/or fee for last minute cancellations. We can’t stress the importance of anticipating late cancellations enough—if the attendee has a last minute cancellation, it's important that each CB and LNG knows their own policy.

For an example of AADE's annual meeting cancellation policy, please visit our website.  Individual CBs and LNGs may borrow from the policy as they see appropriate as well seek guidance on this topic by reaching out to AADE.

If you need additional support setting up your MY AADE NETWORK event, need access to be able to setup events online, or have specific questions that aren’t addressed here, contact mynetwork@aadenet.org for help.
