How we talk to and about people with diabetes plays an important role in engagement, conceptualization of diabetes and its management, treatment outcomes, and psychosocial wellbeing. A taskforce consisting of representatives from AADE and the American Diabetes Association (ADA), convened to develop these guidelines using four guiding principles:
Words can empower people and support self-management; they can also hurt and make living with a chronic condition more challenging. This belief fueled a microlearning video created by Mytonomy and released in June 2018 that interviews diabetes educators and people living with diabetes.
The goal is to help people understand these language concepts and encourage healthcare providers to use person-centered, strength-based empowering language when speaking with and about people with diabetes and all chronic conditions.
Released two months later by Mytonomy at AADE18, a new microlearning video explores how changing the conversation when speaking about diabetes and chronic conditions can change how people feel.
