Guidance for Diabetes Educators

Obesity and Diabetes

Diabetes educators have many opportunities to assist people who have diabetes and are overweight or obese, including implementing lifestyle changes and exploring medication options. Below you will find AADE’s new practice paper on the topic, advocacy efforts by AADE and our partners, educational courses, journal articles, and tip sheets.

New Practice Paper on Addressing Obesity in Diabetes

This practice paper covers treatment options for people who have diabetes and are overweight or obese, including lifestyle and medication options. One item of note is that the authors were trying to make clear that a person doesn’t have to be overweight or obese to have type 2 diabetes.

Obesity and Diabetes Practice Paper

Readers of this practice paper will:

  • Understand the classifications for diagnosis of overweight as well as the three classes of obesity based on BMI.
  • Understand the relationship between hormone balance and its effect on weight.
  • Get familiar with gut microbiome and understand how they can talk with individuals in a way that will resonate with them and help them to understand how certain foods can assist or make weight loss efforts difficult.
  • Understand the progression of obesity and be able to make recommendations when individuals are in the prevention phase.
  • Understand how the AADE7 Self-Care Behaviors™ can be effective in decreasing the progression to overweight and obesity.
  • Know medication and surgical options.
