Diabetes care and education specialists interact with people with type 2 diabetes and related health complications where in some cases the disease and complications have manifested as a result of the individual having a higher weight. Although many diabetes care and education specialists have deep knowledge in caring for people with higher weight bodies, there are simply not enough of them to provide care to the number who need it. The entire care team should be educated to a validated level of understanding. Typically these types of courses have only been available to dietitians. This activity is open to all diabetes professionals and will educate the broad HCP interprofessional care team to apply best practices in caring for individuals with higher weight bodies.

Learners will have the tools, strategies, and confidence to provide compassionate, individualized care to the higher weight individuals that they serve.

Each module is a recorded presentation and includes copies of the module slides. The program includes a 35-question pre-test and post-test, as well as a final program evaluation. Learners will earn a certificate of completion and a digital badge upon completion of the program.

Intended Audience

This activity is designed for diabetes care and education specialists, including nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, physicians, PAs, community health workers, health coaches, and other health care professionals interested in staying up to date on current practices of care for people with diabetes and other related conditions.

This activity is designated for 8 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until 4/20/23. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
    Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)

    CDR Credentialed Practitioners will receive 8 Continuing Professional Education units (CPEU) for completion of this activity.
    Completion of this RD/DTR profession-specific or IPCE activity awards CPEUs (One IPCE credit = One CPEU). If the activity is dietetics-related but not targeted to RDs or DTRs, CPEUs may be claimed which are commensurate with participation in contact hours (One 60 minute hour = 1 CPEU. RDs and DTRs are to select activity type 102 in their Activity Log. Performance Indicator selection is at the learner’s discretion.

    Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists

    To satisfy the requirements for renewal of certification for the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE), continuing education activities must be diabetes related and approved by a provider on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers (www.cbdce.org). CBDCE does not approve continuing education. The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers.

    Board Certified Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM)

    ADCES is the administering body for the Advanced Diabetes Management credentials. Continuing education programs offered by ADCES can be used toward fulfilling BC-ADM Certification and recertification requirements.

    It is the responsibility of each participant to determine if the program meets the criteria for re-licensure or recertification for their discipline.
