Description

This webinar will provide an overview of diabetes in pregnancy, including pre-existing type 1 and type 2 and gestational diabetes. The diagnosis of gestational diabetes, target blood glucose goals in pregnancy and the importance of preconception counseling and care will be reviewed. The benefits of medical nutrition therapy, exercise and diabetes medications will be discussed. The presenters will describe blood glucose monitoring and the role of Continuous Glucose Monitoring in glycemic management in diabetes and pregnancy. Transitions of care and postpartum care follow up for pre-existing type 1 and type 2 diabetes and Gestational diabetes will be included.

Learning Outcome

There are limited resources for the diabetes care and education specialist (DCES) when working with persons with pre existing or gestational diabetes, and therefore a knowledge deficit. Patients identified in pregnancy require close follow up care and this requires an increase in the knowledge level in practice for the DCES.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
-- Review the incidence and prevalence of diabetes in pregnancy.
-- Identify the criteria and screening processes for diagnosis of GDM.
-- Review the management of pre-existing type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes, including preconception care.
-- Define the glycemic targets and the role of monitoring and CGM in pregnancy.
-- Summarize the role of nutrition and physical activity in the management of diabetes in pregnancy.
-- State the components of postpartum care in gestational diabetes and pre-existing type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists

To satisfy the requirements for renewal of certification for the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE), continuing education activities must be diabetes related and approved by a provider on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers (www.cbdce.org). CBDCE does not approve continuing education. The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers.

Board Certified Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM)

ADCES is the administering body for the Advanced Diabetes Management credentials. Continuing education programs offered by ADCES can be used toward fulfilling BC-ADM Certification and recertification requirements.

Other Health Professionals

It is the responsibility of each participant to determine if the program meets the criteria for re-licensure or recertification for their discipline.
