Description

Precision medicine in diabetes aims to utilize best practices, diagnostics, and therapeutics to treat personalized needs, including sociodemographic factors. An introduction to precision medicine and current practices will be reviewed. Current efforts with an international consensus group, Precision Medicine in Diabetes Initiative, to develop guidelines to apply precision medicine in diabetes will be discussed to guide the diabetes care and education specialist in exploring future application opportunities. Expanding the use of precision medicine in diabetes treatment can improve person-centered outcomes and reduce cost yet limitations to widespread utilization remain. These limitations and benefits of precision medicine will be discussed.
