ADCES Foundation/CBDCE Mentored Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Integrated Diabetes Management
In collaboration with the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE), we are pleased to offer a Post-Doctoral Fellowship program supporting the career development of emerging leaders in diabetes care and education, supporting the growth of the profession and the care of people with diabetes.
Our vision supports health services and outcomes research
investigating the dynamically changing environment of diabetes management. We recognize the need to engage and support/collaborate with health services researchers interested in implementing services that positively impact clinical, behavioral, safety, quality, and economic outcomes and enhance the experience for both the person with or at risk for diabetes and the provider.

We recognize the need to engage and support promising health services research scientists interested in integrating diabetes management for positive health outcomes. We recognize health services research is a collaborative approach to clinical research and requires a team of subject matter and methodological experts to train the next generation of diabetes care and education specialists.
The application cycle for the 2024-2025 fellowship is now closed. The application cycle for the 2025-2026 fellowship will open in September 2024.
Applicants must propose a project location in the US with a recommended focus on specific research topics.

Post-Doctoral Fellows
The ADCES®/CBDCE Fellowship supports early career scientists as they launch their career. Current and past fellows are active in the diabetes care and education research community.
2023-2024 Fellow: Synneva Hagen-Lillevik
Dr. Hagen-Lillevik is the current ADCES/CBDCE post-doctoral fellow in Integrated Diabetes Management. Her focus is on gestational diabetes and nutrition, and she is completing the fellowship at the University of Utah College of Nursing under the mentorship of Dr. Sara Simonsen, an expert researcher on health behavior change, pregnancy outcomes and other issues specific to reproductive-age women and women’s health.
Dr. Hagen-Lillevik’s project titled “The Long and Short of It: Do Standard Dietary Interventions for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Lead to Enhanced Nutritional Quality? Women’s Perspectives and a Pilot Intervention” aims to describe women’s perceptions and understanding of nutritional quality after dietary interventions for gestational diabetes, identify potential gaps in the education women received regarding overall nutrition for pregnancy, and to develop a novel nutritional intervention to prevent future metabolic disease.
2022-2023 Fellow: Michelle Danny Stampley Boakye, PhD, MPH, RN
Dr. Boakye will develop and pilot test a web-based tool, called iConcern, to facilitate discussions and aid in identifying diabetes management challenges of individuals newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The tool will facilitate discussions within the primary care setting and enable a person to identify and share with their primary care provider at least two pressing concerns about the diagnosis. Dr. Boakye will complete her fellowship at Fitzpatrick College of Nursing (FCN) at Villanova University, a Doctoral Research Institute and the University of Pennsylvania Health System, one of the nation’s top academic medical centers.
Dr. Boakye will be mentored by Christina R. Whitehouse, PhD, AGPCNP-BC, CDCES, FADCES, Assistant Professor at FCN and Nurse Practitioner at Penn Medicine, Bette Mariani, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor at FCN, and Bridgette M. Brawner, PhD, MDiv, APRN, a health equity researcher with expertise in community-based research.
2021-2022 Fellow: Kelsey R. Howard, PhD
Dr. Howard has recently completed the ADCES/CBDCE Mentored Postdoctoral Fellowship in Integrated Diabetes Management under the mentorship of Jill Weissberg-Benchell, PhD, CDCES. She is preparing to start a faculty position as a psychologist embedded in diabetes care at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.
In this role, Dr. Howard will provide clinical services to youth and families and engage in research and teaching. She is excited to continue research focused on promoting uptake of diabetes technology among youth. Dr. Howard will also work towards certification as a diabetes care and education specialist.
2020-2021 Fellow: Julia Blanchette PhD, RN, BC-ADM, CDCES
Dr. Blanchette was the 2020-2021 ADCES and CBDCE Post-Doctoral Fellow in Integrated Diabetes Management at the University of Utah College of Nursing. During her post-doc, she completed a pilot project titled "The Type 1 Toolkit: A Financial and Health Insurance Education Toolkit for Emerging Adults with Type 1 Diabetes."
Dr. Blanchette is currently a Nurse Scientist and Diabetes Care and Education Specialist at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. She has a unique role where she sees patients as a diabetes care and education specialist, mentors students and trainees, and leads research at the University Hospitals Center for Diabetes and Obesity. Her clinical expertise is diabetes technology and her research focus remains on barriers to diabetes self-management during emerging adulthood and health equity.
