Encouraging Diabetes Prevention via MY AADE NETWORK

Jul 09, 2019

2018 was an historic year for diabetes prevention. The CDC updated their Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program Standards. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) expanded coverage through the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program (MDPP) to approximately 22 million older Americans with prediabetes. A growing number of states, including California, New Jersey, New York and Texas, expanded Medicaid coverage for prevention. And, remarkably, a majority of diabetes educators—3/4 of those responding to our biennial practice survey—reported doing diabetes prevention, with 21% working within a CDC-recognized lifestyle change program.

As you consider your plans for 2019 and beyond, how will you support initiatives that prevent or delay type 2 diabetes within your CB or LNG? How will you connect diabetes prevention with your COI discussions around disabilities, cultural diversity or physical activity? Most importantly, how will you welcome new members who’ve discovered AADE through a Lifestyle Coach Training, a Building Your DPP Workshop or other prevention resource?

Build strong local connections…

  • If you don’t know who’s doing prevention in your city, state or region, check out the CDC’s registry of diabetes prevention programs. Invite local program coordinators, diabetes paraprofessionals and lifestyle coaches to attend your annual conference. Ask them to present about utilizing community health workers, retaining participants through the 12-month program or establishing clinical and community referral networks.

  • The CDC is funding city, county and state health departments across the country to expand diabetes prevention, enhance DSMES and address 6 common, costly chronic diseases. These initiatives align with AADE’s new vision for the specialty while providing opportunities for CB and LNG members to receive support to expand or enhance their work. Invite your local leaders to your next conference and make sure you have a seat at the table at an upcoming State Engagement Meeting.

Bring AADE to your city, state, or region…

  • Request a public or private Lifestyle Coach Training, in English or Spanish, or collaborate with other CBs and LNGs to host one in your region.

  • If you have lots of lifestyle coaches but few diabetes prevention programs, ask about our Building Your DPP Workshop. We can hold a tailored workshop for you, as a stand-alone event, or a pre- or post-conference session at your annual meeting.

  • If you aren’t ready for a major training commitment, invite AADE’s prevention team to speak at your state CB conference—we’d love to share our experiences with reaching priority populations through our CDC cooperative agreement, maximizing Medicare DPP reimbursement and more!

Visit us in Chicago, Houston or at another regional training…

Connect with other AADE resources…

  • Take your data analysis and reporting to the next level with our Data Analysis of Participants System or DAPS! Find out how you can use DAPS to store, analyze, and export your data—and stay on track for CDC recognition—through a free DAPS demo. As an AADE leader, you can also test drive DAPS risk-free through a low-cost one-month trial membership.

  • Struggling to recruit participants, increase provider referrals or present the business case to local employers? Contact us. In the last seven years, we’ve learned a lot about successful strategies to build awareness, increase screening, testing and referral, and activate successful programs. We love to share what we’ve learned by phone, email or through one of our free webinars, like this one on how to engage over-the-road truck drivers.

One of the benefits of being a part of AADE’s national network is your ability to learn from other members through our Communities of Interest. If you’re not ready to start your own diabetes prevention program, listen in on the conversation. Ask your questions. Find out what’s working in similar cities, states, or communities, and learn how you can get started with prevention in your area.

And, remember, you can always “phone a friend” at AADE—our DPP team is ready to connect you with the training, technology, or technical assistance you need to be successful. Email us at
